Sundown

The heat lingered
Long after the sun tucked itself into the blanket of night

No stars hung in the sky
And the moon was waning

The room was sticky
Our bodies smelled raw in the heat
As sweat traveled unseen
Down my breast bone

You lay too close to me
I couldn’t bear your touch
While you tossed
As you slept
I lay awake in summer’s fever

I was back in Ceylon
Young and feral
My lips lined with sweat
Under the burning sun

I dripped with want
Sucked the meat from the Oyster shell
And knew nothing of cold
Cold
Sorrow
