It All Falls Down

The cloudburst came
Tore things to shreds with a roar
Leaving them to collect the debris
Scattered among the whimpers
That blew like scarves in the wind

The remains of the day belonged to no one
People scampered to stake their claim
As the fall of rain became the fall of man
Into the famished cracks of the earth
Before it devoured their flesh
And spit their skeletons from the crevices

Children scurried for their mothers
Across the damp Stygian void
Their crunchy steps led nowhere
They were lost in losses

Into the great white arms of
The fog
